Viktoria Komova - Happy Birthday!

Viktoria Komova, born 30th January 1995, celebrates her birthday today.  Happy Birthday, Viktoria! Have a lovely day.

 Time to revisit a picture gallery posted last year ... amd to hope for a good year for Viktoria and her fans.


I was doing something far more important, researching an article, when these pictures of Viktoria Komova  caught my eye.

They are far from the standard gymnastics pictures of gymnasts celebrating, commiserating, or caught in the midst of their most graceful pose.  Not the best, most aesthetic images to view.  When looking at pictures of gymnasts I am often conscious of selecting the ones taken from the most flattering angle, avoiding the shot with the bent legs, the out of control arms. I took a different viewpoint here, choosing Komova at the most stressed, the least stagey point of her work.  These pictures capture Komova in flight, in the height of motion and effort.  There is no contrivance to them, no trained pose or pause to impress the judges. 

Viktoria Komova is a rare gymnast, classical in style and execution.  Her national heritage of ballet, her family heritage of the best of sport is visible in her posture and carriage.  Every single move, from a simple leap or transition to the most complex of somersault, is performed with absolute amplitude, her line sharp and clear.  Besides her own special talent, it is the result of the meticulous attention of a choreographer from the earliest days of her career.  It is gymnastics that pays respect to a broader culture of movement that is recognisable in other art forms, such as dance.  Such gymnastics renders a Code of Points useless if it can only differentiate by means of execution deductions and difficulty value. 

Komova is the best gymnast in the world, and has been for the past two years.  She is not always the best competitor, but then the judges make too many mistakes.  Hopefully, in 2013 they will finally get it right at the third time of asking, and beyond.

    I agree with you completely. No current gymnast has the gorgeous lines Viktoria possess. For reasons unknown to me, the code simply does not rewards them.

    The Code of Points rewards beautiful lines (i.e. N.Liukin in 2008), but not Komova's. It all depends on the country the gymnast is from.
    I agree with Queen Elizabeth. Komova is the best gymnast. She only needs a few months of training free of injuries.

    It is well-known that Komova won over more hearts in the AA with her slam-dunk floor performance and superior artistry. Even Bart Conner said that, "It's the artist vs. the athlete." This time the artist didn't win but we haven't seen the last of her I'm betting.

      :-) Thanks for your comment and I am glad to hear that even Bart Connor appreciates Komova's artistry.

      But, surely, the point is that Komova is both an athlete AND an artist.

      Indeed, aren't they all athletes? - as a minimum.

      They are all athletes but he was pointing out the difference in style, beauty, and grace between Komova and Douglas. Just like he compared Luikin vs. Johnson as "The Artist vs. The Athlete," saying that in 2008 "The Artist won." I suppose he was wondering, before the results, whether it would happen again.

    Watching her gymnastics brings me a sense of calm and peace, her elegance is mind-blowing.

Nelli Kim - 'Russian gymnastics has closed in on itself' - Lupita translates

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Ed's note : much of the initial response to this interview - both here and in the wider gymternet -  has focussed on the detail of Kim's words and especially her comments about Viktoria Komova, and smiling.  But I think these have to be taken in context, and not too literally. Don't forget that just a day ago Andrei Rodionenko complained bitterly about the judging in Antwerp, calling Kim's behaviour 'aggressive'. For the calculation I used the most recent strong competitive score available for each gymnast: the Spartakiad scores for Yakubov, Novikov and Kisel , and mainly European Championship team-final/final scores for Dukhno, Marinov, Zaika and Sieedin , supplemented by Russian Championship scores where a recent European score was not available.
