Marinov will compete AA in Jakarta

In an interview with sport 24, head coach Valeri Alfosov reflects on the MAG team and how the gymnasts performed in Sochi.

After the men's all-around competition, senior coach of the men's team, Valery Alfosov, spoke to Sport24 correspondent Anastasia Loginova about his plans for the World Championships and summarized the results of the all-around at the national championships.

❓ How would you rate the boys' performance?

💬 It's hard to give a definitive answer. The national team performed brilliantly on the parallel bars and high bar, and they performed beautifully. The end of this competition was interesting; there were many mistakes today, and the boys were battling it out. Everyone had the same scores until the fifth apparatus, and the champion only emerged on the sixth. Of course, these performance shortcomings need to be addressed in preparation for the World Championships, because our level of difficulty is high, but our execution is significantly lacking.

❓ Speaking of the World Championships, there was information that Novikov and Yakubov are slated for the all-around. Will there be any changes now? Perhaps Marinov will be given the opportunity?

💬 Yes, of course. Novikov got injured, and now he's off the team for treatment. Marinov certainly proved today that he can be on the team and compete as an all-around athlete.

❓ Speaking of Marinov, will he have time to improve anything further before the World Championships?

💬No. This program he just did after his injury is his best for now. You can't overload a gymnast with difficulty because he's just recovering from his shoulder. This is his first competition since his injury. Time has passed, a long period, and he performed well for himself and for us. He remained the team leader, leading the young guys.

❓ I saw reports that the ambassadors of Russia and Indonesia met. Will there be some kind of acclimatization camp before the World Championships in Jakarta?

💬No, there's just a short acclimatization period; all the European countries arrive a little earlier before the start. We'll be going exactly the same way—a little earlier in the World Championship schedule. There won't be anything special.

❓ Will Novikov be replaced by someone else who has neutral status?

💬 No one has neutral status yet, so that's very difficult.

Who really won the WAG All Around?

You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all. I have taken the time to look at the reference judges' scores for the top four in the women's all around.  The FIG explains here what their role is, and how they are selected.  I even used my calculator, which is a risky thing in my hands.  My, how I wish we could have seen a similar document for the Tokyo World Championships. I wonder if anyone can explain how, if the FIG's Code of Points is so objective and fair, it is possible to come up with two different results using two differ...

Viktoria Komova - back pain has forced me to step down

I awoke this morning to a very simple statement from Viktoria Komova, on her vk.com site, which Papa Liukin has translated (via the IG forum): 'Dear friends, fans, and gymnastics lovers. Unfortunately back pain isn't allowing me to train to my full potential and get ready for competitions. I've made the very difficult decision to stop training and take care of my health. I want to thank everyone for their support! Without your love and warmth it would've been more difficult to go all the way. Thanks everyone and see you soon! Love and kisses.' Well, first of all, good wishes and best of luck to Viktoria, who has struggled since 2012 to re-establish herself fully as a competitive gymnast, whose talent was so great that she secured gold on bars at two different World Championships, four years apart, whose career was littered with controversy, who must be allowed to live her life as she wishes.   I know that the 'gymternet' will now be overflowing...

Aliya Mustafina - 'I'm just trying to stay healthy'

A brief interview with the World and Olympic Champion from All Sport is summarised below. Russian national gymnastics continues to prepare for the World Championships, which will be held October 3-12 in Nanning (China). Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina told Mary Staroverova about her health and about preparations for the competition. - In June, I went to Germany to solve the problem with my ankle.  I had a small operation to clean the joints of a build-up of bone particles.  Nothing serious was evident, and the operation went well.  Now I have to tumble.  But there is still some discomfort, a slight pain at full load, and I can not tumble at full force.  For the time being, I try to go easy on my legs.  After the Russia Cup I will have to fully prepare for Worlds. That is just one month.   Even if I'm not tumbling, I will keep myself in good shape, and that should suffice (smiles). - I can't say if it is a different pain to before Europeans, because at...
