'Today, I did everything I was capable of' - Daria Spiridinova

Lauren Cammenga has translated this interview with Russian bars specialist and AA candidate, Daria Spiridinovs.


"I was actually on standby for the all-around. We trained the all-around before the European Championships; I was ready. But, on the other hand, my all-around difficulty isn't very high at the moment, and it's hard to compete. Although I am trying very hard to add difficulty bit by bit on every event. But today I did everything I was capable of.

Of course, I had a little bit of nerves today, but not a lot. I don't know what happened. This isn't the first time I've had that mistake on beam – I also had it at last year's European Championships. I don't understand the reason. After beam I was really disappointed, and understood that I would already be way behind the leaders. Now I just have to let it go – what happened, happened. I should qualify to the bars final, and what's more, I still haven't shown everything I can do on that event! And there's still a chance I will get through to the all-around final. And there we'll battle it out."

    I think Seda was a better choice, she would have qualified for AA, filled the second slot in BB final and VT, so she was better than paseka in every aspect, but who knows maybe Paseka surprises us!
    Anyhow good luck for them all ...

    I really like this young Russian team and their attitude. Spiridonova is showing such a mature, calm, focused and determined side, I love it. They definitely still have a ways to come, but if this spirit stays with them, they will go far.

Viktoria Komova - back pain has forced me to step down

I awoke this morning to a very simple statement from Viktoria Komova, on her vk.com site, which Papa Liukin has translated (via the IG forum): 'Dear friends, fans, and gymnastics lovers. Unfortunately back pain isn't allowing me to train to my full potential and get ready for competitions. I've made the very difficult decision to stop training and take care of my health. I want to thank everyone for their support! Without your love and warmth it would've been more difficult to go all the way. Thanks everyone and see you soon! Love and kisses.' Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...
