Evgeniya Shelgunova - Top Gym tournament success

Following her successes at this year's Spartakiade and Youth Olympics, Russian junior star Evgeniya Shelgunova recorded a good result at the Top Gym tournament in Belgium. Results can be found on IG.

Shelgunova will be eligible to compete at senior level in 2013. You could read a brief biography and summary of an interview with her here.

She is a very dynamic gymnast who seems pretty fearless.

Evgeniya's team mate in Charleroi was Yulia Chemaryova, who scored best on bars. Chemaryova is coached by Maria Nazarova, alongside World Floor Champion Ksenia Afanasyeva and 2010 world team member Ksenia Semenova.

A.Sidorova Fan has commented on Shelgunova's loud voice - she can be heard here supporting her friend!

Apparently she has a D value of 5.5.

I have to say, though, I do not like the trend towards broken music mixes which is becoming common amongst the Russian girls at present. Shelgunova's gymnastics is more precise than inspiring at present - and very influenced by the American 'style' on floor - which is in fact very lacking in style - very focussed on the requirements of the Code, I suppose. I guess she has time to improve before she turns senior.

Sergei Starkin - 'My job is to bring Aliya back to the best in the world'

Sergei Starkin, then coach to Denis Ablyazin and now coach to both Denis and Aliya Mustafina, at the 2012 Olympics.  Courtesy of the RGF The latest news, that Aliya Mustafina now has a personal coach - not just a personal coach, one of Russia's best coaches, Sergei Starkin - was only released yesterday.  Since then we have heard from Vladimir Zaglada on the implications of this change - and now Sergei Starkin himself has spoken to Natalia Kalugina.  The following English language summary of the article is as close as I can get to the original, though please be aware that I will have to paraphrase where the translation isn't clear; this is not a word for word translation. Back in early December, when Aliya Mustafina turned to Sergei Starkin and asked him to work with her, there was talk about why a men's coach should work in the women's sport.   This is despite the fact that Starkin began his professional life as a women's coach.  His best known gymnast
