Mustafina will skip the World Cup in Glasgow because of back problems

Russian gymnastics coach Valentina Rodionenko has said that 2012 Olympic champion, Aliya Mustafina, will not compete at the World Cup in Glasgow due to a back injury.

"Aliya withdrew from the competition in Glasgow due to serious back problems. Now we will send her back to Germany, and the injury will be treated. When doctors advised her to pay attention to her health, she replied that it would be better to put up with it and to compete through the pain. She has an inflammation of the lumbar spine. Today we were deciding what to do with Aliya - to treat her in Russia or Germany. We came to the conclusion that the second option is optimal.

I think Aliya will go to Munich tomorrow. We have an agreement with local experts. She may need to stay in hospital, but we are not expecting her to need surgery.   She will be treated conservatively. I think everything will be fine. I'm sure she will be ready in time for Europeans."

  1. I`m worried for her back. She had been competing almost non-stop. Perhaps skipping Glasgow will allow her to rest and recuperate for the competitions in 2015.

    1. Aliya was never on the roster for Glasgow, though ... I think the Rodionenkos are covering themselves.

      Not good for Aliya.

    2. Why "not good for Aliya"?

Honestly, I am very concerned about the situation of her since Alexandrov was fired and she was left without a coach. All other Russian gymnasts have a responsible coach to train them. Ganina is only choreographer.

Anyone can make mistakes, but Aliya is getting worse since the European Championship. Then she made that horrible failure UB .... The body position it is bad. I can not say it in English, but her back on UB are arched. The position of the legs is also bad.

I really like Aliya. As gymnast, and mainly as a human being. She is a very mature young adult. But I think that she is carrying the russian team on her back for a long time. And, her health; her upgrades, her coach? Compete with the injured ankle, compete with bruised back ....

Then you say: "not good for Aliya."" The Rods are covering themselves". It sounds me bad and I am more worried about the future of Musty.

  2. I didn't know she was suppose to compete in Glasgow.

At least this will make her rest. She should have been resting for a while now. She has been the only London Gymnast to compete nonstop since the Olympics.

Hopefully her back can be treated, but no gymnastics for a while. I would prefer she skip Europeans as well tbh.

    1. I hope she gets better soon. She has been nonstop. Kyla Ross has also been going since London and has been taking it slow with upgrades... I would like to see them both in Rio

  3. if she is suffering from back injury why they let her compete in Stuttgart (GER) in the first place?

  4. When a gymnasts 'rests' it means slowing down (but not stopping) the training, having some 'me' time, spending time with family and friends, going on vacay to get a mental refresher, etc. When you are sick and in a hospital, yes you're inactive but you're not in a calm state of mind, not happy, not at any peace with yourself and the world. You're just in pain and then you're in rehabilitation which is a pain in itself because you have to work twice as hard to get back to a decent level of endurance and strength. So imo, this i not good news, and i wonder at the Rod's speaking so reproachfully about her and if there's drama stirring.

I agree wholeheartedly with Elizabeth's assessment that this public statement is made so that the right ppl in the glory-crazed Russian gov't know that Aliya's lackluster performances are not THEIR fault. Aliya was NEVER slated for Glasgow and leading up to to Stuttgart never mentioned any pain which she has done on all the other occasions she was going into a competition less than healthy. Even after her AA loss, she did not blame it on illness, which isn't something a Russian is ever opposed to doing (lol). It seems like Stuttgart inspired her to go home and maybe up her difficulty too soon, and just like in 2012, when she was putting too much strain on her back (to save her knees), back pain started. Let's face it, Aliya doesn't have good technique in certain aspects of her gymnastics and its ultimately what stops her from being a dominant gymnast, b/c the minute she pushes too much difficulty her form gets sloppy and she can't handle the load it puts on her physically (e.g her DLO is scary looking even on a resi).
This is too terrible. Russia's current best all arounder, who was once called "complete" by Comaneci, has now twice failed to make AA podium and even at euros couldn't compete as an unofficial all arounder. It's been a bad year for her in some respects, then, but tbh, its partially her fault! Alexandrov said she's headstrong and needs a good coach who can match her temper with wisdom.

    1. Dear Kary,

I understand and agree wholeheartedly with Elizabeth's assessment que this public statement is made so que the right ppl in the glory-crazed Russian gov't know que Aliya's lackluster performances are not THEIR fault.

Indeed, this has always been the attitude of Rodienkos: Saying first that's not their fault!

I did not mean criticize Elizabeth. When I asked "? Why not good", it means: How much is it bad for Aliya? why Rods has not indicated another coach for her? Am I only realized that without upgrades in her routine, improve her physical fitness, weight loss, health care is exactly what will be the passaport of Aliya to Rio?

I can not understand how the Russian Federation "agree" with the stubbornness Aliya in not having another coach!!! Who could it be? I think Alyia was the most complete gymnast till 2010. But after the 2011 accident, she will never be the same. But, I think she still has a chance if all this work will be done.

Please forgive me if I offended you or Elizabeth. I did not mean that.

In addition to be writing in another language, the way people express themselves are different, and I would not be misunderstood.

      I love your blog.

    4. Glaucia, there was never any offense taken. I'm often in agreement with your opinions on RGF on this website and even Youtube when i find your comments!

  5. For now, I am glad to hear that she doesn't need surgery. That means it isn't super terrible and that she won't have to quite training. Hopefully with a better back she can get a higher difficulty UB routine. Hope for the best and I hope Komova has a good competition and upgrades for the Voronin cup (As in having a dismount on beam such a double tuck and maybe a bigger tumbling element that just a layout for the 2nd pass). If Aliya is ready for Euro's then good, if not, I think with Komova and Ksenia back and with the new seniors international experience, Russia will be fine for Euro's without Mustafina, and that should allow her to build up her strength slowly and gradually leading up to the world championships.

    1. Via Instagram sources, I can say that Anastasia has recently been on holiday with her Moscow team mates and is training, but there is no evidence that she has at any point returned to Round Lake.

Does anyone know anything? It would be great to see her back on the team.

    2. I believe Grishina was at Round Lake a few weeks ago. It appears that her plans to compete at Voronin aren't happening though, based on her IG posts. :(

UPDATE 23/9 - Russian WAG team for Nanning confirmed

Daria Spiridonova will compete at her first World Championships this autumn.  Picture : RGF Natalia Kalugina has confirmed the Russian team for Nanning : Aliya Mustafina, Maria Kharenkova, Tatiana Nabieva,Ekaterina Kramarenko, Alla Sosnitskaya, Daria Spiridonova.  Reserve : Polina Fyodorova Here is a paraphrased translation of a comment by Natalia Kalugina on her Facebook page : 'Aliya has confidence in competition and she is, kind of, a coach to this team.  In Europe she succeeded in this role and she has told the coaches that she even liked it. The main fighting force will be Kharenkova, Sosnitskaya and Spiridonova.  Accordingly, the strongest apparatus will be beam (Marina Bulashenko With God!).  The Chinese women, of course, have been known to win that apparatus, but if one falls, they all fall.   Alla Sosnitskaya could compete in the vault final, and - in theory - on the floor. On bars, of course, Russia will probably lose to the Chinese women, but they should be able to hold

Who really won the WAG All Around?

You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all. I have taken the time to look at the reference judges' scores for the top four in the women's all around.  The FIG explains here what their role is, and how they are selected.  I even used my calculator, which is a risky thing in my hands.  My, how I wish we could have seen a similar document for the Tokyo World Championships. I wonder if anyone can explain how, if the FIG's Code of Points is so objective and fair, it is possible to come up with two different results using two differ

Kapitanova or Tutkhalyan? The ever changing seas of Russian gymnastics

Tutkhalyan and Melnikova - gymnastics dynamite and Russia's not so secret weapon for the Rio Olympics Just as I was about to go to bed last night one of our readers posted a link to a Tass article in which Valentina Rodionenko repeats the team membership for Europeans, but with a significant change, replacing Seda Tutkhalyan with Natalia Kapitanova as a reserve.  This Allsport article , linked on the RGF website this morning, still includes Seda as reserve.  I give up; there is never a final word.  Team selections are a difficult thing and especially so with injury rates in the sport as high as they are.  Media reports are unreliable.  Or Valentina changes her mind as often as she changes her fur coats.  Only one thing is for sure.  We will know who will compete when the teams walk out into the arena on Wednesday 1st June.  Maybe. Aside from the obvious observation - how must it affect the girls to be so unsure? - I'm going to repeat again how disappointed I am with this
